Before I became a freelance translator I worked for a large company. They had excellent IT support but at that time I didn’t realize it. If something went wrong or I wanted some settings changed I would call IT, tell them at what time I would be at lunch or in a meeting and when I would come back they would have taken care of everything that needed taking care of. Updating or backup never a problem, I always had the newest and was OK in every aspect. I was taken care of in the computer world.

Unfortunately those days are gone. I do not have IT support like that anymore nor can I blink my eyes and my desires come true. As a freelancer I am my own IT support a lot of times and I have to make sure I have whatever new software or hardware I might need. This means some of my time is spent reading manuals or taking an online course for a new CAT tool widget.
A much dreaded time has come upon me. I finally have to get another, new PC. I know I am not alone with this feeling of dread in my stomach, some of my colleagues feel like this too. Researching what is on the market and trying to determine what will meet my needs. No, I do not play cool games but I do need my Trados to work and oh my, yes I heard awful things about Vista. I am happy I have mastered – or think I have partially gotten a grip – on Trados and now I see that PCs come preloaded with Vista, well Vista sounds like a bad date because I’ve heard that Trados is not compatible with Vista or has quirks. All in all Vista seems to have a bad rep, I even saw them on TV and it was not on the most wanted list but contrary. I am making notes, comparing prices. I really would like to stick with Windows XP but that is a bit harder to find. I also would like to get another laptop. Questions upon questions. I ended up buying from Dell again, reasons are, I can customize my PC and haggle my price and I got it with Windows XP and Office XP. Am I afraid of the future because I am not switching to Vista? I do not think so. The good thing about Dell is that they give you the opportunity to have Windows XP installed now, with a free option to upgrade to Vista later. Yes, Dell is more expensive but for me it’s worth it. I just want to play it safe for a bit longer, there are still to many bugs for me in Vista and I do not have a strong enough IT support to fix any problems I might run into while in the middle of translating a big project.

Just my five cents.

Hi,

understand you, was in IT support before.
Vista is a too new product to be reliable on all machines, or/and compatible with all the differents sorts of software already out.
Windows XP got reliable only after Service Pack 2.
Stick with Windows Xp with Sp2 and you should be ok, backup files on a external hard drive and burn on cd/dvd.
Make sure you have the System Restore option enabled.

It's my point of view, I haven't tried Vista and since I have 4-5 pieces of software for translations, not sure even half of these would be compatible.
all the best,
Rom

As a website developer, I am back and forth on Vista.

I wonder if Windows 7 will be any improvement.
