A great place to start your career as a translator is this Guide on How to Become a Professional Translator: http://www.columbustranslations.co.uk/language-translator. I have put a lot of work into it but I would still love to try and improve on it. Hi Laura,
this largely depends on your language pair, your country of residence etc. There are no universal fees. I would suggest that you search the web for some websites of translators working in your language pair and have a look at their rates.
Just for info: rates for non-literary translation are very different from the literary translation (books) ones.
